What is the W-8 Form?

The W-8 Forms are documents required by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from foreign entities (both individuals and companies) in the U.S. These forms are important for foreign individuals and entities to provide information about their tax status and beneficiary status for tax withholding purposes in the United States.


Keeping this information current is essential, as the form needs to be renewed every three years.



 

Where can you get your W-8 Form documentation?


If you receive a notification from your bank indicating that your W-8 form has expired or is going to expire by end of year, use the links below to download the necessary documentation:



































 

Important Information

Expiration and Obligation

Remember that your W-8 form expires every three
years, and updating it is mandatory to avoid tax withholdings.
Fraud Prevention

Handwritten Signature
 
The signature on the form cannot be electronic; it must
be handwritten.
Multiple Account Holders

For Individuals W-8 BEN:

If your account has multiple holders, each one must
submit an updated W-8 form.

For Business W-8 BEN-E: Signer must be an authorized signer and any beneficial owner with more than 10% of ownership must complete and sign a W-8 BEN.

 Foreign Tax Identifying Number (FTIN)

If your country recognizes a national ID as a valid Tax Identification Number (TIN), you may enter it in Line 6a.

For example, in Colombia, the cédula de ciudadanía is officially accepted by the Colombian tax authority (DIAN) as a FTIN.



Important information for W-8BEN-E (ENTITIES) forms:

  • Legal Representative’s Signature: The W-8BEN-E form for entities must be signed by the legal representative.
  • Business Information Update: If there have been changes in the company’s information, such as the address, update this information with the bank.
